 Good Quality Brick

The constituents used for making good quality of bricks are explained in details below –

1) LIME -

PROPORTION - It is about less than 10 %.

FUNCTIONING - Reduces shrinkage on drying.

If it is in excess quantity results in over melt and looses its shape and also changes its colour from red to yellow.

2) ALUMINA -

PROPORTION - It is about 20 to 30 %.

FUNCTIONING - It imparts Plasticity.

Its excess quantity produces crack in bricks on drying.

3) SILICA -

PROPORTION - It is about 50 to 60 %.

FUNCTIONING - 1) Retains its shape and imparts durability.

                             2) Prevents shrinkage of warping.

If its proportion is in excess it may results in the formation of brittle quality of bricks.

4) MAGNESIA -

PROPORTION -  It is about less than 1 % .

FUNCTIONING - Helps in imparting colour upto yellow.

If in excess leads to decay of bricks.

5) IRON OXIDE -

PROPORTION - It is about less than 7 %.

FUNCTIONING - 1) It gives red colour on burning.

                              2) It also gives strength and hardness.

If it is in excess may cause the colour dark blue or black.

6) ALKALIES -

PROPORTION - It is about less than 7 %.

FUNCTIONING - This are mainly acts in the form of soda ash.

If in excess may cause efflorescence makes un suitable for bricks.

This are the constituents together forms a Standard good quality brick.
